Workplace changes and miscarriage Joy Wisdom

Workplace leave for couples

A significant step forward in workplace compassion was announced, as Northern Ireland confirms the introduction of up to two weeks’ leave for couples who experience miscarriage. This new policy recognises the profound emotional impact of pregnancy loss, offering both partners protected time away from work during an intensely private and sad period.

The proposed workforce bill is expected to extend to England and Wales next year, marking a wider cultural shift towards acknowledging miscarriage not only as a medical event, but as a deeply human experience that deserves space, understanding and recovery. For many couples, this time away will provide essential emotional breathing space.

From a health perspective, it also allows women the opportunity to begin rebalancing hormonally. Following pregnancy, even in its early stages, the body undergoes rapid hormonal changes, and after miscarriage these shifts do not simply stop overnight. In some cases, it can take weeks or months for hormones to stabilise, impacting mood, energy and overall wellbeing.

I suggest a further critical benefit would be hormonal rebalance, with emotional release 1-2-1 therapy from pregnancy start/stop, helping women to come to terms with their loss and helping to improve hormonal imbalances. The echo of miscarriage can be long lasting, as I have seen in many women, help is at hand.  I would save you the pain of loss, with compassion and person centred focus. Workplace leave is a brilliant step towards change reflecting a growing awareness that recovery is not just physical, but emotional and hormonal too an important move towards more compassionate, informed support in the workplace.
