Maternity and Birth Trauma

The hidden costs of birth trauma - too often we mistake signs of birth trauma for poor behaviour and the cost to families & to society is staggering.  Learn about D.A.R.E - Dissolve And Resolve Emotions therapy.

Birth Trauma: The Silent Crisis

Birth is the most intense experience we face, yet impacts are underestimated globally. We are all born, fact is how we are born influences our sense of safety, resilience and long-term health.

Birth trauma occurs daily through emergency interventions such as C-sections, forceps, and ventouse deliveries, or from long, exhausting labours. While these procedures save lives, they also bring shock and trauma. Globally, elective or diary C-sections account for up to 48% of births in some regions and evidence shows medicalised deliveries can carry lasting consequences for both mother and child.

The human toll is significant:

1 in 7 mothers experience postnatal depression

Up to 18% develop PTSD after birth

1 in 10 fathers suffer depression, often overlooked

Infants born under stress face higher risks of Anxiety, ADHD, and Mental health struggles

For too long, women’s distress has been dismissed as “baby blues” or “just hormones.” Yet birth trauma carries hidden costs for families, health systems, and society. Its effects can mirror the aftermath of a serious car crash, only without emergency support in place.

The gap: Healthcare professionals may recognise the term but lack training, tools, and services to prevent or address it. Families are left unsupported, carrying invisible wounds that may last years. Trials show infants cognitive growth is impaired when mothers suffer with PPD or PTSD after birth. The impacts and long term influences are many and ripple out to family members.

Solutions exist:  Early action changes outcomes. JWT pregnancy support and Birth Trauma Programmes provide pre-and post-birth support using gentle, effective pre-mother support and post-birth trauma 1-2-1 trauma release methods, plus much more.
