Despite many calls for better birth experiences we start 2026 with headlines that Australian practices around birth are failing women. Unfortunately a global problem and not exclusive to Australia.
I have reported, written and spoken about birth trauma for over a decade. Women and their infants suffer daily, professionals declare not enough is known, not recognised and no data exists to quantify the percentage of women affected, with a suspected 70% of women being affected. And if a new mother is affected so will her baby!
Having specialised in women and children’s health and the impacts of birth trauma for two decades*, with distressed, fractious outcomes it is no way to begin life!
Book (Pregnancy & Birth A New Generation) *
The knock on effect is trauma, anxiety and stress is not rocket science to deduce mental, emotional health issues follow. Why mothers show distress just talking about their experience they still carry the trauma even years later!
Why seeing a specialist, an expert that understands the impacts of trauma like myself helps to release trauma for both parties, mother and child, releasing the emotional impacts, helping to improve bonding with baby, and an improved family unit. As birth trauma has a long standing impact upon women and their offspring.
