Conception & Pregnancy Loss

Supporting the journey through fertility, loss and forward planning

Conception is often imagined as a time of hope and excitement, but for many women the journey is far more complex. Fertility difficulties, IVF, miscarriage and pregnancy loss can bring profound grief, uncertainty and emotional distress.

Pregnancy loss is also far more common than many realise. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists reports that around one in five women experiences an early miscarriage following a positive pregnancy test. Around half of miscarriages are associated with chromosomal abnormalities, while age, viral infections, virginal acid mucus, some medical conditions and other factors can increase risk. Frequently, however, no single explanation can be found. (RCOG)

For women, the physical experience may end, but the emotional experience does not necessarily end with it. Hormonal influences from start of conception can linger, making the loss harder to bare.

Grief can coexist with sadness, anger, guilt, anxiety, depression, fear and a loss of confidence in one's own body. For some women these feelings lessen with time; for others they remain, resurface during fertility treatment or become particularly powerful during a subsequent pregnancy. Research confirms increased depression and anxiety following pregnancy loss. Newer evidence also demonstrates significant levels of anxiety, depression and stress in the weeks following miscarriage. (PubMed) Any woman who has experienced pregnancy loss will describe the months of grief and loss that continues, PTSD can also be involved.

Being told to “get over it” is not emotional care.

At Joy Wisdom Trust, we recognise the woman behind the fertility journey.

Our fertility, IVF and pregnancy-loss support programmes incorporate emotional release methods, Joy Wisdom's specialist therapeutic approach designed to help women explore and process difficult emotions rather than carrying unresolved distress forward.

Support can include integrated whole-body focus, emotional realignment following fertility or maternity experiences, preparation for IVF or future conception, rebuilding confidence and forward planning for parenthood.

The aim is not to erase what happened. It is to help women acknowledge their experience, process difficult emotions and move forward with greater emotional understanding and support. Sometimes the body isn’t ready to support new life full term. Why JWT advocates, preparation and investigation to prevent disappointment.

Your loss matters. Your emotional health matters. Don’t have to carry loss silently.
