Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is characterised by symptoms of premenstrual phase of a menstrual cycle.  A severe PMS experience heightened emotional and behavioural changes. In UK, an estimated 5% to 8% of women of reproductive age experience PMDD, roughly 1 in 12 to 20 women, approximately 824,000 people. Research from University of the West of Scotland (UWS).

 

Globally, 1.6% confirmed PMDD, equivalent to 31 million individuals worldwide.

PMDD exact cause is unknown, however believed to link to a person’s abnormal reaction to hormonal changes. Hormonal shifts and changes can include serotonin deficiency.

 

Experiences of PMDD can be debilitating, affecting personal, social, and professional life. Anyone can develop PMDD. However, underlying historical psychological and emotional experiences, transgenerational impacts, increases risk , especially when family history of PMS or PMDD. A personal history of depression, post-partum, post-natal issues, depression or mood disorders are examples of proneness to this disorder. Lifestyle choices for example smoking is another risk factor.

 

A serious disorder Research by the International Association for Premenstrual Disorders (IAPMD) confirms the high rates of suicidal ideation and attempts. About 412,000 will engage in self-harm. Around 275,000 people will attempt suicide.

Astonishingly, research indicates, (on average) it may take up to 12 -20 years for correct PMDD diagnosis:  An extreme unacceptable diagnostic journey with significant life impacts, affecting relationships, mental health, employment, job security.
