Birth programmes are set in minds and hearts however we live in an age of ever increasing intervention as women are unable to birth naturally. Intervention has grown steadily as a matter of course over thirty years. And very rare in my day of the 1970s.
In the UK, around 1 in 3 women are now being induced.
However, a survey run by the Patient Information Forum found that only 25% of women and birthing people felt prepared by the information they received.
There are many reasons for this.
Women are unprepared for the length of time it takes to birth naturally.
Unrealistic in their thinking especially with a first labour, 2nd and 3rd birth processes undoubtedly faster for most mothers.
In the 4th trimester, with growth spurts for baby, more demands are put upon mothers body, this part of pregnancy is more tiring and exhausting than appreciated.
Parents focus on the arrival and the tick list. Yet miss out on the tick list of mum’s readiness. Rest and relaxation is very important in 4th trimester. Anxiety and fear may be prevalent. The more informed we are the better prepared smoother the outcome. Enables parents to be in charge and not pushed into making decisions in a stressful environment.
Today, women work far too long into the 4th trimester and are unprepared for the marathon it takes to give birth. We as birthing mothers need to physically, emotionally and mentally get ready for birth process. Learning relaxation skills. Bonding takes place in the 4th Trimester. And more focus is required on connecting, soothing and aligning, with baby.
Trends tend to be work right up to due date. Don’t give themselves time to ease off, bond and build up energy prepare for a sacred labour process. Essentially, this makes women exhausted even before labour arrives. Therefore, they run out of steam unable to go full term with birthing process. Intervention becomes a requirement. Parents need bigger picture education, upshifted from out of date thinking. To learn how to prevent, avoid be prepared in all aspects of pregnancy, birth and parenting… what to expect when baby arrives.
