Constipation in infants and children are often dismissed as “just digestive discomfort.” Yet, it plays a crucial role in skin health and conditions like eczema. The body eliminates waste through the bowel, kidneys, lungs and skin. When excretion is blocked or slowed as in constipation, toxins and waste products are redirected, often showing up as skin inflammation, rashes, or eczema flare-ups.
Unfortunately our understanding or assessment of excretion can be limited in parental care, as adults and even health professionals don’t pick it up as the start of a problem. Excretions and constipation is not an age thing. Many adults do not excrete regularly which logically will cause blockages and contraindicators on health. The knock on effect is skin conditions, headaches, stomach bloating and discomfort. Cancer has its roots in lack of excretion; gut dysfunctions are a common factor in disease.
As babies they would be expected to excrete several times a day, every day. Joy founder with 25 years of experience of specialist children’s health, finds reality of an infant’s excretion cycle add hock, severely irregular. Prenatal thinking is this is normal, OK to go days or even a week without excretion… which in reality is abnormal. And will create an unhappy child/adult.
Did you know constipation can trigger Eczema ?
The facts:
· Constipation affects up to 30% of children at some point (NICE, 2023).
· Poor elimination increases systemic inflammation and toxic load.
· The skin becomes a secondary excretory organ when the gut is overloaded.
· Trauma (birth shock, maternal stress, adverse trauma via early interventions) disrupts the nervous system and digestive motility, increasing risk of constipation.
· Vitamin and mineral uptake is contraindicated and skin becomes weak, needing nutritional intervention to correct the sensitivities and strengthen skin condition.
Despite this logical link, basic anatomy and physiology (A&P) connections are often overlooked in infant health. Professionals may treat skin conditions in isolation, missing the role of excretion and digestion.
At the Joy Wisdom Trust, we dive deeper than symptom management. Our holistic programmes and D.A.R.E. - Dissolve And Resolve Emotions Integrated Therapy address underlying hidden root causes. By releasing trauma, calming the nervous system and restoring digestive flow, individuals see improvements in bowel health, reduced skin flare-ups and greater overall wellbeing.
💜 True healing comes when we address the whole person, not just the surface symptoms. Supports the gut–skin connection, improving digestion and immunity. Helps restore sleep patterns, emotional stability and family harmony.
